William and Mary

This is an illustration for a short story (for adults) by Roald Dahl called Willam & Mary, in which William dies of cancer, but chooses for his brain to live on, complete with a single eye.  He’s been something of a tyrant and a disapproving old miser as a husband, so when he’s reduced to just a brain in a tray Mary is able to regain some proper footing in her marriage.   It is ‘darkly amusing’; as in laugh-out-loud weirdness with an indisputable undercurrent of sit-and-weep-in-silence bleakness.  Mary comes out on top though; makes me wonder if Dahl might have been a feminist.

I’m pleased with the drawing, I like Mary’s face and Williams starey brain eye.  Love to have your feedback, let me know your thoughts.
